Florida is a fitness playground that is famous for its hot weather and beaches. It is ideal for people that would like to stay in shape throughout the year. The exciting outdoor activities and beautiful coasts blend organic food culture and beach gyms, which are perfect for fitness enthusiasts. There are also some yoga retreats and studios that engage in mindfulness practices. Year-round sunshine doesn’t make every city equally fit, though, and the latest data shows big differences in parks, gyms, walkability, and residents’ health from one city to the next. How we ranked the fittest cities in Florida
Our top 10 follows the 2026 Florida Fitness Index published by the weight-loss company Reverse Health, because it’s the only recent ranking that covers every Florida city with at least 100,000 residents. It scores each city on fitness establishments per resident (30% of the score), park space (20%), fast food as a share of restaurants (15%), walkability (15%), and adult obesity, inactivity, and air quality, using data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the CDC, the EPA, and OpenStreetMap. We cross-checked the results against the 2026 ACSM American Fitness Index, which ranks the 100 largest U.S. cities, and against the Trust for Public Land’s 2026 ParkScore.
| Rank | City | County | What earned the spot |
|---|---|---|---|

The 10 fittest cities in Florida
1. Boca Raton

Its adult obesity rate of 23.2% and inactivity rate of 19.3% were the lowest among the top-ranked cities, and it ties West Palm Beach for the highest concentration of gyms and fitness studios in Florida. Add miles of public beach along the Atlantic and it’s easy to see why so many residents make exercise part of their routine.
2. Tallahassee
Florida’s capital scored 63.5, and its strongest category was green space for outdoor exercise. It’s a very different setting from the coastal cities on this list, with rolling hills, canopy roads, and a large university population keeping the running and cycling scene busy.
3. West Palm Beach
West Palm Beach scored 62.9 and matched Boca Raton for the most fitness establishments per resident in the state.
Like the other South Florida cities on this list, there are both activities on land and sea in West Palm Beach. Also available are paddleboarding, swimming, and the other usual activities. If you want to move here, better get some professional packing help to assist you with the process.Â
4. Gainesville
Gainesville scored 61.2 and posted the highest share of park acres per 1,000 residents in the ranking, along with some of the cleanest air. Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park on the city’s southern edge gives runners, hikers, and cyclists thousands of acres of open land close to town.
5. St. Petersburg
St Petersburg also features boxing, yoga, strength training, pilates, and cycling boot camps and classes. There are also some golf courses available, as well as various flag football and volleyball activities. Besides all that, there are some tennis courts, and surf classes available. If this place meets all your fitness needs, look for movers in St Peter FL for professional help.
St. Petersburg scored 58.9 in the Florida ranking and placed 45th in the 2026 ACSM index, where its community and environment rank of 27 was the best of any Florida city. Its park system ranked 19th among the 100 largest U.S. cities in the 2026 ParkScore, and the Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail starts downtown and runs more than 40 miles north to Tarpon Springs.
6. Clearwater
Unlike the previous two cities, Clearwater has a great many watersports, such as swimming, fishing, kayaking, and surfing. Besides all of this, you can enjoy Clearwater’s beautiful vistas and go bird watching or hiking. That mix, plus strong scores for green space, earned Clearwater a 58.6 in the 2026 Florida ranking, just behind St. Petersburg. The Pinellas Trail also passes through downtown, and our Clearwater movers can get you settled near it.
7. Davie
Davie, a Broward County town west of Fort Lauderdale, scored 57.0. It’s one of three Broward cities in the top 10, more than any other county.
8. Miami
Another place with great water activities, Miami has sailing adventures like swimming with dolphins, or extreme ones like flyboarding. Other, more common fitness activities are yoga, cycling, walking, Zumba, and strength training. You can also do some surfing if you are up to it.
Miami scored 55.0 in the Florida ranking and had the highest walkability result in the state. Nationally, it placed 39th in the 2026 ACSM index, second among Florida cities.
9. Sunrise
Sunrise, another Broward city, scored 54.0 in the 2026 Florida ranking, finishing just ahead of Fort Lauderdale.
10. Fort Lauderdale
Coming up, Fort Lauderdale hosts watersports such as parasailing, kayaking, and snorkeling. Other activities are linked to the gym and various fitness clubs, such as strength training, yoga, Zumba, and HIIT sessions. Fort Lauderdale completes the 2026 Florida top 10.

Why do rankings disagree about Tampa?
There are a lot of fitness activities that are held in Tampa Florida. It has numerous fitness studios which provide yoga classes, cycling, dance, boxing, and strength training. If you’d rather live in a trail-heavy suburb south of the bay, Lakewood Ranch has more than 150 miles of trails, 10 community parks, and three county parks, and you can find movers Lakewood Ranch FL, and arrange a move.
Tampa is the best-ranked Florida city in the national ACSM American Fitness Index rankings, at 37th in 2026, and it ranked 9th in the country for trail miles in the 2025 edition. Yet the Florida-only study put Tampa eighth from the bottom of 27 cities, with a score of 46.3. The difference comes down to what each ranking measures. ACSM weighs park spending, trails, and residents’ health behaviors across the whole city, while the Florida study gives 30% of its score to gym and studio density and penalizes a high share of fast-food restaurants. If you move to Tampa, the neighborhood you choose matters more than the citywide number: living near the Riverwalk or Bayshore Boulevard makes an active routine far easier than living along a busy commercial corridor.
Which Florida cities have the most room to improve?
Jacksonville
There is a large number of birds here, which makes Jacksonville a great place for birdwatching. Water sports such as kayaking and fishing are very popular here. You can also go camping or horseback riding if you so desire. It stands on its own at 7th place on our list. The data is less kind, though. Jacksonville ranked 84th in the 2026 ACSM index and third from the bottom in the Florida study, with a score of 34.6, partly because fast-food restaurants made up 48% of the restaurant types measured.
Orlando
In them, you can find urban bike trails and paddle boarding trails. These three also feature a water sports complex located in South Orlando. Suitable for everyone above the age of 6, this Watersports Complex features wakeboarding. slides, and other obstacles to be conquered.
Orlando lands in the middle. It ranked 64th in the 2026 ACSM index and 15th of 27 in the Florida study, with 15.6 fitness establishments per 100,000 residents and an adult inactivity rate of 24.8%. On the other hand, WalletHub’s 2026 healthiest cities report ranked Orlando 24th in the country, the best result of any Florida city, thanks to strong food and fitness access. Movers in Orlando can help if Central Florida is where you’re headed.
Port St. Lucie and Lakeland
Port St. Lucie ranked 98th of 100 in the ACSM index, even though its air was good on 97.5% of days, the second-best result in the country. Lakeland finished last in the Florida study, with only 6.2 fitness establishments per 100,000 residents and fast food making up nearly 53% of the food businesses measured.
How to find an active neighborhood before you move
Citywide rankings are a starting point, not a verdict. Before you pick a home, look up the nearest park and trail access on the ParkScore map, check how far the closest gym, pool, or rec center is, and walk the neighborhood at the time of day you’d actually exercise. In Florida’s summer heat, shade and early-morning access matter as much as distance, and a home near the Pinellas Trail, the Tampa Riverwalk, or a beach access point will get more use than a gym membership across town.
